Jets rout Red Wings 6-2 to open critical five game homestand Featured

Winnipeg, Manitoba (NHN)-Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, Nikolaj Ehlers, Blake Wheeler and Dylan DeMelo each had a goal and an assist as the Winnipeg Jets cruised to a 6-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings Friday night.

The Jets scored three in the first and never looked back, adding two more in the second as they routed the Red Wings to kick off a five-game homestand with a win.

Nino Niederreiter also scored for the Jets.

Mason Appleton and Vladislav Namestnikov had a pair of assists.

Connor Hellebuyck made 22 saves for Winnipeg, who snapped a two-game losing skid (42-31-3).

The Jets moved four points up on the Calgary Flames for the final Western Conference playoff berth with 87.

David Perron and Joe Veleno scored for the Red Wings.

Magnus Hellberg turned aside 23 shots for Detroit, who dropped to 33-33-9.

Kyle Connor opened the scoring just under 7 minutes into the opening stanza when he redirected a Brendan Dillon shot from the point past Hellberg to make it 1-0 Jets.

The goal was his 29th of the season.

Blake Wheeler gave Winnipeg a two-goal lead at 11:57 after Nikolaj Ehlers hit him with a crisp pass while he was driving the net.

The big winger got his stick down and drove the disc past Hellberg to score his 16th of the season.

Mark Scheifele scored 13:34 into the first when a point shot from Neal Pionk trickled it's way to him in front of the Detroit net.

Scheifele snapped the disc into a wide open goal to score his 39th of the season.

Dylan DeMelo made it 4-0 1:20 into the second period when he took a Mason Appleton feed from the left boards at the top of the face off circle before moving in and drifting a hight wrister past Hellberg.

The goal was his 5th of the season.

Nino Niederreiter scored 13:42 into the second when he followed up on his own shot before backhanding the puck by Hellberg to make it 5-0 Jets.

The goal was his 23rd of the season.

Nikolaj Ehlers converted a Blake Wheeler pass in front of the Detroit net to score his 10th of the season at 5:07.

With Neal Pionk off for interference, David Perron fired a power play goal just inside the left post off a shot from the high slot at 10:41.

The goal was his 20th of the season.

Detroit got it's second goal of the night just 21 seconds later when Joe Veleno snapped a loose puck in the crease off a Matt Luff shot to make it 6-2 at 11:02.

The goal was his 8th of the season.
