Scheifele nets hat-trick to pace Jets to 8-4 pasting of Devils Featured

Winnipeg, Manitoba (NHN)-Mark Scheifele fired three goals and added an assist to lead the Winnipeg Jets to a 8-4 win over the visiting New Jersey Devils Friday night.

Scheifele scored his 3rd, 4th and 5th goals of the season and provided a much needed spark to the Winnipeg offence which scored only four goals in their last five contests.

The Jets built up a three goal lead before letting the Devils score four unanswered goals to relinquish it before storming back and posting a two-goal cushion by the end of the second period.

Nikolaj Ehlers scored twice and Blake Wheeler had three assists for Winnipeg.

Kristian Vesalainen, Josh Morrissey and Logan Stanley also scored.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 33 shots for the Jets, who moved to 11-8-4.

Ryan Graves had a goal and an assist for the Devils, who closed out their two-game game road trip with a loss.

Damon Severson, Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier also scored for New Jersey.

Jonathan Bernier turned aside 32 shots for New Jersey, who dropped to 9-9-4.

Mark Scheifele got Winnipeg on the board 1:52 into the contest when he took a Neal Pionk feed in the high slot before moving in alone on Jonathan Bernier and lifting a backhand past him.

The goal was his 3rd of the season.

Nikolaj Ehlers scored two minutes later when Pierre-Luc Dubois poked a puck ahead which Ehlers skated into and fired a one timer, beating Bernier high glove side to make it 2-0 Jets.

Winnipeg extended their lead to 3-0 when Paul Stastny found a wide open Kristian Vesalainen in the slot and hit him with a backhand saucer pass which the winger promptly hammered past Bernier.

The goal was his 2nd of the season.

Damon Severson scored New Jersey's first goal of the night at 9:08 on the power play when Tomas Tatar hit him with a cross ice feed before he moved into the faceoff circle and beat Hellebuyck with a wrister just inside the far post.

Jack Hughes pulled the Devils to within a goal with 24 seconds remaining in the first when he fired a rebound past Hellebuyck to make it 3-2.

The goal was his 3rd of the season.

The comeback continued in the second as Nico Hischier converted a slick backhand feed from Jesper Bratt, beating Hellebuyck high glove side to tie the game 37 seconds into the second.

The Devils took the lead 49 seconds later when Ryan Graves' point shot found net, sailing past Hellebuyck's glove.

The goal was his 3rd of the season.

Nikolaj Ehlers beat Bernier with a high shot to score his 2nd of the night at 10:39.

The goal was his 8th of the season.

Josh Morrissey was credited with a goal when Blake Wheeler's point shot hit the Jet defenceman at 15:26.

Scheifele completed the hat-trick 9:36 into the third, when he one timed a Blake Wheeler feed past Bernier to score his 5th of the season.

Adam Lowry rounded out the scoring at 16:33 when he tipped a Logan Stanley wrister into the net.

The goal was his 3rd of the season.

Winnipeg hosts Toronto on Sunday while New Jersey returns home to face the Senators on Monday.
